The following items were left out of the meeting minutes for Jan. 18.

1) GENERAL ASSEMBLY: The Virginia General Assembly is back in session and there will be countless issues facing them that will affect us as college students. If you have any concerns about issues, then check out what's going on in the GA by clicking on http://legis.state.va.us/ Write your legislators and let them know how you feel!!!

2) JJ DINNER: If you are interested in going to the Jefferson Jackson Dinner on Feb. 11 in Richmond, then please email Laura Harrison at laura.harrison.05@cnu.edu by Jan. 27. This is a great time to get dressed up, network, meet top notch Democrats, and party. The best part is that since we are volunteering, we get in FREE!!!!

3) NEWPORT NEW DEMOCRATS: The next meeting of the Newport News Democrats will be on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7pm. If you are interested in going please email youngdem@cnu.edu

4) VYD CONVENTION: Those club members planning on attending VYD Convention on March 24-26 are invited to stay at President Hilliary Turner's house for free, with home cooked meals, instead of paying for a hotel room. If you are planning on going to convention and would like to stay at Hilliary's house for FREE, send an email to youngdem@cnu.edu

The CNU Young Democrats met on January 18th at 7pm in SC 205.

Thanks to all who attended inaugural events, it was a blast!

The E-board wants to create a recruitment and retainment committee. This committee would be in charge of thinking up ways to get new members involved. This is a great way to say involved with young dems if you cannot make monthly meetings. If interested e-mail the club account.

February 11th the Democratic Party of Virginia will be hosting their annual JJ Dinner. We are volunteering at this event, if interested in going and did not sign up at the meeting contact the club ASAP!

It is time for our club to charter with VAYD for 2006. If you are an official member of the club (paid dues) and have not filled out a membership form contact Jessica Bowman, jessica.bowman.04@cnu.edu.

March 24-26 is VAYD Convention. It is being held in Richmond. Please know if you want to go by the next meeting. If you are planning to stay at the Radisson please have your money if at all possible at the next meeting. For more info.. www.richmond2006.net

The Young Dems will begin meeting THIS WEEK on WEDNESDAY, JAN. 18 at 7pm in SC 205 and every Wednesday, so be sure to note the new day and location.

Even though the election is over, there is still work to be done and events to attend. The General Assembly is in session and there will be issues facing them that affect college students. The Democratic Party of Virginia is hosting their annual Jefferson Jackson dinner in a few weeks and Virginia Young Democrats convention is only a few months away.

The CNU Young Democrats met on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7pm in SC 233.

Items discussed:
1) THANK YOU to everyone who worked so hard to get Tim Kaine elected as the next Governor of Virginia! We hope it was a fun, learning experience for those involved.

2) THANK YOU to all the members who helped out at the Community and Commonwealth Dinner. The event was a huge success and we coulnd't have done it without your help! Also, looking for pictures of the event. If you took pictures, please send them to the club account.

3) TIM KAINE IN NEWPORT NEWS- Tim Kaine will be in Newport News on Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30pm at the Mariner's Museum for his Transportation Town Hall meeting. This is a great chance to hear about the Governor-elect's plans for Virginia roads.

4) The Virginia Young Democrats are having their annual J. Sargeant Reynolds Dinner on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Charlottesville. Check www.vayd.org for more information and please email Andrew Almand at callector41500@aol.com if you are interested in going.

5) The next meeting of the Newport News Democratic Committee is Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7pm. They will be having a reorganization meeting, so for those of you who are freshmen and sophomores, this is a great way to get involved early with the local Democratic Committee. They will also be having their annual Christmas Party that night. If you are interested in going, please email the club account.

6) We will be selling "Bushisms" box calendars as a fundraiser beginning next week. It will be online, linked to our blog (www.cnuyoungdemocrats.blogspot.com) and you will be getting an email about it. For every calendar sold, the club gets 50% of the sale. The sales take place online, so there's no excuse to not send the information to all of your family and friends or do some holiday shopping!!! More information to come.

7) Inaguration is Jan. 14, 2006 in Colonial Williamsburg. This is right before we come back for the spring semester. More at the next meeting.

Countdown to Election Day-Events

Young Dems,
Just wanted to inform you of some events going on this weekend. This isthe final weekend before Election Day, so it is imperative that you do your part this weekend to get Tim Kaine elected and here are some wayshow!

1) Volunteer at the Kaine HQ this weekend and on Election Day. ContactStella Shaw at stella.shaw@vavictory2005.org if you would like to know hours and/or need a ride.

2) Join the YDs as we have a counter demonstration to Jerry Kilgore's presence on campus! Kilgore, George Allen, and John Warner will be at CNU on Saturday from 3-4 in the alumni room. We will be standing outside with Kaine signs and Democratic signs to tell Kilgore that this campus, this area, and this state are going BLUE! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE plan on coming out for this!! If interested, please meet in the lobby of the student center at 2:45pm.

3) Tim Kaine, Creigh Deeds will be holding one final rally on Monday,Nov. 7 at the Holiday Inn Select in Norfolk at 7pm. We will be meeting in the James River Circle at 6 to go to the event. If you are interested in coming please email the club account.

4)ELECTION DAY-TUESDAY!!
- POLL WORKERS: If you are interested in pollworking on Election Day, please email the club account so we can send the information theproper people. Please bring Kaine signs and literature to pass out tovoters. You can work anytime you're available. You will be working thePeninsula Fine Arts Center (right behind the Mariner's Museum)
- STREET CORNER SIGNS: The club has made posters for members tohold at the intersection of Warwick and JClyde and University Place(across from the Village) and Warwick. Please email the account if you are interested in doing this fun event!
- KAINE HQ: If you can't make it to work the polls or hold signs,then head over to the Kaine HQ for phonebanking and taking voters to the polls
- ELECTION NIGHT PARTY: We will be attending the Election Night Party at the Marriot Hotel in downtown Richmond. The party begins at7pm. We will be leaving from the James River parking circle at 5pm tohead to Hilliary's house in Richmond for a FREE HOME COOKED DINNER before heading to the party. Please email the club if you are intersted in attending the party! We will also need drivers that will be comingback to campus after the party. We will need to know ASAP if you cancome!

Kaine Leading Kilgore in Polls!

A recent Washington Post poll showed Tim Kaine leading Jerry Kilgore 47% to 44%.
This is among the latest polls showing Tim Kaine surging in the final weeks in a very tight election.
Experts have said that this may be the closest election in Virginia in recent memory.
Every vote is going count.
NOW is the time to get involved! The Kaine HQ is always in need of volunteers, so spend just a few moments of your day talking to voters, going door to door, talking to your friends. This election is crucial to the Commonwealth of Virginia and has national implications for the 2006 Congressional Elections and the 2008 Presidential election. Take the time to get involved! After all, it's your state, it's your future, it's your voice!

Our meetings will resume on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7pm in SC 233.
However there are a few activities coming up that we wanted to make you aware of.

1) Peninsula Jefferson Jackson Dinner: Saturday, Oct. 15 7pm-midnight at the Hampton Convention Center Ballroom. The Newport News Democratic Committe has asked the CNU Young Dems for 2 volunteers. The event promises to be exciting, with Leslie Byrne, Creigh Deeds, and Bobby Scott in attendance! It's a great time to hang out with fellow Democrats! If you are interested in volunteering, Please email the club account by Monday, Oct. 10.

2) NOVA Campaign Invasions: Please join the Virginia Young Democrats as we help out two Young Democrats, Delegate Steve Shannon and Greg Werkheiser running for the House of Delegates from Northern Virginia and Tim Kaine, Leslie Byrne and Creigh Deeds! The event is on Oct. 14-15 and will include canvassing, an event with Gov. Warner and a party. It's going to be a blast, so if you are going to be in NOVA that weekend, we encourage you to go!!!

3) Virginia 21 Debate: October 19 at 7pm, Virginia 21 will be sponsoring a debate between the College Republicans and Young Dems. It promises to be a lot of fun, so come on out and cheer on the Young Dems!

Rules for being a good Republican

1) You have to believe that the nation's 8-year prosperity prior to W's administration was due to the work of Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush, but that today's growing deficit and rising gas prices are all Clinton's fault.
2) You have to believe that those privileged from birth achieve success all on their own.
3) You have to be against government programs, except Social Security checks on time.
4) You have to believe that government should stay out of people's lives, yet you want government to regulate your personal sexual and reproductive decisions.
5) You have to believe that pollution is ok, so long as it makes a profit.
6) You have to believe in prayer in schools, but don't pray to Allah or Buddha.
7) You have to believe that a woman cannot be trusted with decisions abouther own body, but that large multi-national corporations should have no regulation or interference whatsoever.
8) You love Jesus and Jesus loves you and, by the way, Jesus shares your hatred of AIDS victims, homosexuals, liberals, and former President Clinton.
9) You have to believe that society is colorblind and growing up black in America doesn't diminish your opportunities, but you still won't vote for Alan Keyes.
10) You have to believe that it was wise to allow Ken Starr to spend $50 million dollars to attack Clinton because no other U.S. presidents have ever been unfaithful to their wives.
11) You have to believe that a waiting period for purchasing a handgun is bad because quick access to a new firearm is an important concern for all Americans.
12) You have to believe it is wise to keep condoms out of schools, because we all know if teenagers don't have condoms they won't have sex.
13) You have to believe that the ACLU is bad because they defend the Constitution, while the NRA is good because they defend the Constitution.
14) You have to believe the AIDS virus is not important enough to deserve federal funding proportionate to the resulting death rate and that the public doesn't need to be educated about it, because if we just ignore it, it will go away.
15) You have to believe that biology teachers are corrupting the morals of 6th graders if they teach them the basics of human sexuality, but the Bible, which is full of sex and violence, is good reading,right on the mark, and belongs in schools.
16) You have to believe that Chinese communist missiles have killed more Americans than handguns, alcohol, and tobacco.
17) You have to believe that even though governments have supported the arts for 5000 years and that most of the great works of Renaissance art were paid for by governments, our government should shun any such support. After all, the rich can afford to buy their own art and the poor don't need any.
18) You have to believe that the lumber from the last one percent of old growth U.S. forests is well worth the destruction of those forests and the extinction of the several species of plants and animals therein.
19) You have to believe that we should forgive and pray for Newt Gingrich, Henry Hyde, and Bob Livingston for their marital infidelities, but that bastard Clinton should have been impeached.
20) You have to believe that George W. Bush really won the last election.

Little David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up -- fireman, policeman, salesman,doctor, lawyer, etc. David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father.
"My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and make love with him for money."
The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and took little David aside to ask him,"Is that really true about your father?"
"No," said David, "He works for the Bush administration, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids."

Greetings everyone--the Petersen for Lt. Governor campaign is up and
running in Hampton Roads!

In the past week, Chap attended the Peninsula Democrats meet up in
Hampton, and two events in Chesapeake: the Bethany Baptist Church
dedication, and the Oscar Smith High School Young Democrats JJ Dinner.
Chap is travelling around the state spreading his message about the
Virginia we all want--and he will be back here very soon!

A couple important items:

WE HAVE AN OFFICE: The Petersen Campaign's Hampton Roads Office is at
the corner of First View and Ocean View--and we will be up and running
later this week. We need help setting the office up, making calls,
collecting signatures, and other things--anyone who can help or would
like to set a time to come into the office, please write back!!

April 5th--OFFICE GRAND OPENING: Chap Petersen will be here with us
on April 5th, sometime in the evening, for our official office grand
opening!! SAVE THE DATE--we want a big crowd to come check out our
new space and welcome Chap into Hampton Roads. This event is
tentative--and we will let you know more specifics, or if anything
changes!!

Minutes from 3/14/05 Meeting

The CNU Young Dems met on Monday, March 14 at 7pm in RATC 101. All officers were in attendance.Items discussed:

1) The Chili Cook Off has been scheduled for Saturday, April 2 from 2-4:30 in the President's Courtyard on East Campus. 120 invitations have been sent out. We are still in need of utensils and cookware and members to cook chili. Andrew is still working on getting the following speakers: Bobby Scott, Tim Kaine, Chap Petersen, Phil Puckett, and Alan Diamonstein. If you are interested in donating utensils, cookware, or cooking, please contact Andrew at callector41500@aol.com

2) If the VYD Credentials Committee accepts our rechartering packet, we will be rechartered for the 2005-2006 year. Thanks to those members who filled out the forms.

3) The upcoming Virginia Young Democrats state convention was also discussed. It will be held April 8-10 at William and Mary. Convention costs are as follows: $30/delegate for the banquet, $15/delegate for registration and $15 for t-shirts. Stay tuned for more information.

4) Finally, nominations for officers for the 2005-2006 school year were made. Congratulations to our nominees.

Chairman Howard Dean's DNC Plan
1. Show up! Democrats should never concede a single state, a single district, or a single voter to the Republicans. We must be active and compete in all 50 states and work with the state parties to build a true national party.
2. The success of the national party depends directly on the success of the state parties — we must better integrate our operations by:
Having the DNC pay the salary of each state party executive director to help ensure that the state parties have adequate funds.
Collectively building and sharing supporter lists between the national and state parties.
Recruiting, training, and encouraging candidates to run for office at every level — building tomorrow's farm team from the ground up.
Actively grow local Democratic committees and communities by working with neighborhood activists who can reach out in their communities and enable the grassroots to support state and local candidates.
Maintaining a permanent campaign in every state. We need to establish an ongoing, active presence, which does not have to be recreated every four years for four months.
3. Set core principles that define the Democratic Party and what we stand for and take a bottom-up approach to the development of the Party's message;
4. Use cutting-edge Internet and other technologies to fundraise, organize, and communicate with our supporters;
5. Strengthen our political institutions and leadership institutes to promote our leaders and our ideas — these organizations must work together in a coordinated and integrated fashion to elect Democrats at every level, so that we can take this country back.

Thanks for your interest and participation in the CNU Young Democrats! We know the outcome of the election was certainly not what we all worked so hard for, but that doesn't mean that it's time to give up. It's more important now than ever that we stand up for what we believe and get involved. The Virginia General Assembly is in session and a governor's race is getting started! We need your help! The CNU YDs are planning a Chili Cook Off for Saturday, April 2. We are hoping to get local elected officials as well as the candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General speak at this event. This event will be a great fundraiser for the club and will really get our name out among the community. We are hoping to raise a lot of money at this event. But we can't pull this event off without your help! We know you have been active in the club in the past and we could use your activism now. We need members to volunteer to cook, set up, do the paperwork, etc. and it's important that we have your help. With your help, this event will be a huge success! If you would like to know more about the cook off or volunteer, then please come to our meetings on Monday nights at 7pm in Ratcliffe 101. Meeting Minutes 2/7/05

The CNU Young Dems met on Monday, Feb. 8 at 7pm.All officers were in attendance.
1) Members of the Animal Welfare Coalition spoke about a fundraiser they are having in the breezeway. It will be a vegan bakesale and the proceeds go toward a worthy cause. They have meetings on Tuesdays at 12:15 in RATC 111.

2) The Young Dems will NOT be meeting next week since it is Valentine's Day. Our meetings will resume on Feb. 21 and will be held in RATC 101.

3) The date for the Chili Cook Off has been set for Saturday, April 2. The event will last from 2:00-4:30 and those involved will need to be at the site at 12:30 to help set up. The venue will be the President's Courtyard at the CNU Apts. If you would like more information, please email Andrew at Callector41500@aol.com

4) We may be selling "Proud to be a Virginia Democrat" bumper stickers. Stay tuned for more information.

5) Tuesday, Feb. 15 is the Peninsula Democrats Meeting to be held at Topeka's Steak House in Hampton at 7pm. Attorney General Candidate Creigh Deeds will be speaking.

KAINE: CRITICIZE IDEAS, NOT PEOPLE
Democratic attacks on religious right were mistake, he contends

Democrats have made a mistake in past Virginia elections by attacking the religious right, Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine told the Democratic Party of Virginia at its annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner on Saturday night.

Kaine, the party's prospective candidate for governor this year, also said the party needs to put more emphasis on faith and values if it wants to recapture voters who have drifted to the Republican Party.

Kaine, in a sometimes fiery talk to the 1,000 Democrats assembled for their party's largest annual fund-raising event, said "sometimes Democratic candidates, when they are faced with a bad idea, trashed the religious right, when what we meant to trash was a bad idea. We should never, never trash people or label people as part of the religious right, or go after them, because when we do that, we drive people away who are with us."

Kaine shared the stage at the Greater Richmond Convention Center with two potential presidential candidates in 2008.

U.S. Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware has made no secret of his ambitions. He was the keynote speaker.

Gov. Mark R. Warner has been more coy, but as he mounted the stage last night the crowd chanted "'08, '08." Warner made a campaignlike speech, accompanied by a campaignlike video that extolled the accomplishments of his administration.

Thanking his wife and children for their "support and patience" in giving him the go-ahead to run for governor in 2001, Warner said, "Maybe sometimes we'll have that conversation again." The audience applauded.

He has another option. He could run for the U.S. Senate next year against Sen. George Allen, a first-term Republican. War ner's term expires next January.

In a brief media availability before the dinner, Biden described Warner as "a serious guy who has a lot going for him. In the phrase of the day, he is a blue governor in a red state."

Since losing the presidential election in November, Democrats have gone through a good deal of soul-searching about whether the party has ceded moral issues to the Republicans.

Kaine has emphasized his Roman Catholic faith as he prepares to take on Republican Jerry W. Kilgore in the gubernatorial election.

"I will never cede to any other party or any other candidate the label of the faith-and-values party, because Democrats are about faith and values," Kaine said. "But we can be a little bit better about this."

Kilgore has sought to depict Kaine as a liberal Democrat who favors abortion rights and opposes the death penalty. Kaine has said he opposes abortions and the death penalty, as matters of faith, but will uphold the laws of Virginia if elected. The laws restrict abortions and allow the death penalty.

"I'm not apologizing for my religious beliefs," Kaine added.

About the race ahead, Kaine said, "I have confidence that what Virginians want is leadership and vision, not fear and division."

As for Kilgore, Kaine attacked his leadership on fiscal matters, noting that last year, during the budget impasse, Kilgore wanted a referendum on taxes - "something we haven't had in Virginia since Jamestown." And when a tax increase was finally agreed to, "Jerry Kilgore tried to scuttle it," Kaine said.

Biden, the ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said last week's election in Iraq has improved the situation there. He said President Bush appears "at last" to have come to the realization that the Iraqis must be trained to defend their own country.

Speaking about moral values, Biden said the Democratic Party has made a mistake by defending late-term abortions.

Social Security Petition

Democrats were outraged when Rep. Bill Thomas (R-CA), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Bush's point man in Congress on Social Security, suggested that the amount of Social Security checks should be tied to the race or gender of the person receiving it.

Chap Petersen for Lt. Governor

The 2004 election may be over, but that doesn't mean it's time to sit back and relax. Work has already begun on the 2005 state race for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General. In order to get thier names on the ballot for the June 14 Primary, the candidates must have petitions and signatures from registered voters. The Young Dems are helping to collect signatures for Lt. Governor candidate Chap Petersen. If you are interested in helping out, then attend the next Young Dems meeting or send an email to youngdem@cnu.edu We also have Chap Petersen bumperstickers.

Hey Young Dems!If you couldn't make it to today's meeting, then here's what you missed.
1) The Democratic Party of Virginia's Jefferson Jackson Dinner will be held Sat. Feb. 5 in Richmond. The CNU YDs will be volunteering at this event from 5-10pm. We have all the volunteers we need, but there is a waiting list if you would like to go but are not among the volunteers. Tickets are $65 for students with a valid ID. That may seem pretty steep, but prices for non students are double! There is a chance that the club could subsidize the cost or that volunteers from other organizations drop out and we can take more volunteers. If you are interested in going, please email the club account at youngdem@cnu.edu More information to come at next week's meeting.
2) A Chili Cook Off Fundraiser was discussed. For more information contact Andrew Almand at callector41500@aol.com
3) This Saturday is a Council of Presidents meeting for the Virginia Young Democrats in Williamsburg at William and Mary. Erin and/or Andrew will be representing CNU at this event. Following the meeting, Virginia Young Democrats President Chris Bast will be coming to CNU to speak to the YDs about work we can do to help Lt. Gov. candidate Chap Petersen who spoke to us last semester. Time and location of Chris Bast's talk is TBA, but please plan on attending! This is important for our club and important to the Petersen campaign! If you are interested in coming please email the club account so we can let Chris know how many to expect.
4) Meeting times (for now) will be at 3pm on Wednesdays in the upstairs Student Center lounge. The location and hopefully the time will be changed so keep an eye on your inboxes for more info.
